Why Does EzineArticles Beat Your Website?

By Ben Holmes

We've all been there, we have a great website, and we post a new article on "purple elephant miniatures", then turn around and submit the same article (or slightly re-written article), to EzineArticles.com. We take a look at the Google result pages for our chosen keyword a few weeks later, and what do we find? Our wonderful website - page 357... the identical (or nearly identical) article on EzineArticles - page one.

Why does this happen, and how can we take advantage of it?

The first concept that you must completely understand is that websites are composed of webpages... simple, right? But keep in mind that when a search engine displays results, it is displaying a webpage, not a website. When searching for a particular topic, what Google (and other search engines) return, is the specific webpage that best matches the topic. It does not display the website where the best match is found.

So the battle lines are drawn - we are matching our webpage on our site where the article is - to the webpage on EzineArticles where our article is located.

Let's step back a moment and recall just what a search engine is doing - as this is critical to understanding what is happening when your website fails so miserably against EzineArticles. Google earns its money by selling advertising - but it cannot sell advertising unless it has a tremendous amount of traffic coming to its site. How does Google ensure that it has the most traffic? By providing the best possible service in it's niche.

If I search for "purple elephant miniatures", on any search engine - I expect to find exactly what I'm looking for... I don't expect to find out "How to Stop Smoking" when I'm not looking for that topic. So Google has developed algorithms to determine the best possible match for anything that a visitor is looking for. This ensures better traffic than other search engines, which in turn means that it can charge the highest rates for advertising on Google. They make more money because they are providing the best service.

So what does this mean in terms of our website vs. EzineArticles? When Google sends it's spider to collect and examine your webpage, and EzineArticle's webpage - it will no doubt place them both in the same keyword categories. These little critters are absolutely horrible at understanding what you've written. Garbage that I wouldn't read past the second sentence will seem just as valid to a search engine spider as the highest prose from an English Lit major. So how is a spider to determine which webpages it's collected should end up on the first page of results, rather than on page 357?

A search engine spider has the soul of a mathematician - and can easily tabulate the words in your article, and can quite accurately determine what your article's main topic is - what it cannot do is figure out whether or not the article is worth reading. So search engines simply put it to a vote. In effect, they ask other humans what webpage is most likely to be the best possible result for a given keyword.

This is done partially by means of looking at backlinks, and also by examining the entire website where the webpage lives. Google will look at your puny PR1 site, and compare it to the page rank of EzineArticles, which is currently a PR6 - and figure out that most likely, the better results will be found at the PR6 website. Backlinks play a role in determining PR rank - and there are currently several million backlinks for EzineArticles according to Google, and Yahoo reports almost 10 million backlinks. So your site, with 500 backlinks, is simply not going to be in the same ballpark.

Because of this, EzineArticles will invariably stand ahead of you in the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages), and you need to take advantage of this. You're going to make a trade with EzineArticles - you'll offer them some unique content, and they'll in return, use their massive PR rank and Google love to boost your article to the first page of Google. Of course, this also depends on wise keyword selection - which is beyond the scope of this article.

Piggybacking on the power of EzineArticles can mean traffic to your website - even if your website doesn't appear in Google. These articles can also gradually move your website up in the rankings, because of the backlinks that the articles themselves provide to your website. So if you want to rank well for "purple elephant miniatures", or the keywords of your choice, you simply must begin article marketing. It works, and works well.

I've often found in my lifetime teaching a sport (as a hobby), that the more you teach, the more you learn. Its true in the Internet marketing field as well - since in struggling to explain myself, I find myself making the topic more interesting and understandable even to me!

Thanks for your comment!

P.S. I note that your article is number one in Google for anyone who searches for "Improving your life with astrology", which was your title.

Thanks for this information!

It's too bad that I didn't submit this article to EzineArticles as well (it would have been the perfect example...) a similar article that was posted to my website is now number 3 on Google for 'purple elephant miniatures'

It's easy to hit the first page of Google - you just have to select long-tail keywords!
