What Does the Lottery Have to Do With Making Money Online?
By Ben Holmes
Selling to the hungry "Make Money Online" market is quite a bit like the lottery system. Lottery officials know that the chances of the average lottery buyer winning any large amount of money is millions to one - and similarly, people who sell you the latest greatest rehashed system for making thousands of dollars a day on the Internet know very well that the smallest percentage, (well under 1% I suspect) of those that buy their product will ever actually use it to make money. The simple fact is that a lottery ticket and the newest Ebook product have a great deal in common. They both give the hope of making great sums of money with no more effort than it took to whip out the credit card to pay for it. And just as a lottery ticket provides really great hopes & dreams - up until you discover that your numbers were not chosen - so to does the latest greatest Internet 'Make Money' ebook offer you hopes and dreams ... all the way up until the time you discover that it takes time and work to actually put into operation. Now, I'm quite sure that the authors of these great products are not intentionally raking money out of you, knowing that you'll never do anything - many of the 'make money' products I've purchased have been excellent indeed, and if followed, will surely make money. These authors cannot FORCE you to actually apply the great ideas that they sell you. So they offer the information in good faith - but I'm sure that they know that most people will never do anything with the information. I once had an argument with a friend who's pulling in several thousand dollars a month in Ebay sales - I told him that he can pick up even more money if he were to write an ebook about what he does - and sell it on Ebay (This was before Ebay outlawed downloadable products). He flatly refused to do so - thinking that he'd be educating many prospective competitors. I explained my own experience with selling a manual on How to Earn Money Selling Vintage Postcards; I sold many copies of that ebook, yet never noticed my sales slowing down from any additional competitors. I suspect that many buyers were already selling vintage postcards, and were just intrigued to find out what I was doing differently... and the other buyers found out just how much work was involved. Also, the market is simply large enough to absorb additional sellers with no noticeable impact. So perhaps someday I'll write an ebook on making money online - but I fully understand that what I'd be selling is really a dream, not a step-by-step plan that will vault someone away from their day job. Because just like all the 'make money' authors today - I can't force anyone to drink the water, I can only lead you there.

Re: "but I fully understand that what I'd be selling is really a dream". Excellent point. I'm pretty sure that most of the purchasers also have a pretty good idea that they're just buying themselves a dream too. I'd suspect that often that's what they went looking for anyway (possibilities). One sad thing about it though is that these make-money-dream-ebooks (it seems to me) tend to give the entire medium a bad name. Electronically delivered educational material is incredibly efficient for all involved. For example:(enter self-promotion here) My manual "How To Make Your Computer Invisible!" solves an actual problem, and based on customer feedback and inquiries; I think it's probably pretty accurate to state that very close to 100% of my customers actually DO use it for its intended purpose (Hiding their IP Address with their very own Private-Elite-Proxy-Server). I guess my point here is that getting past the customer fears about ebooks (that have potentially been caused by these get rich quick ebooks) is quite possibly my biggest sales obstacle. I started giving away a free trial version in hopes of combating those fears a bit, and it seems to be working so far, but it's a shame that such an incredibly efficient medium as ebooks has gotten such a bad reputation. -Mishio Tsenaka Elite-Proxy-Server.com
A very thought provoking intel, Ben. Thank you for sharing this fine read. This horse is looking to drink the internet knowledge. Best wishes. Frederick
