Google Lies To You!
By Ben Holmes
When writing articles to drive traffic to your website - the key that can provide success is to target long-tail keywords - keyword phrases of 3 or more words. Simply picking a three word phrase is not enough - however... you must chose a three or more word keyword phrase that: 1. Has a decent number of searches each month. 2. Has low competition from other websites. How to determine these two factors? Number of Searches per Month Google will give you the approximate number of searches per month... simply go to their Keyword Tool, and begin your search there. The third column in the results page, labeled Approximate Search Volume will show you the rough numbers for the month. This is usually good enough to work with, although if you want real accuracy, you'll have to create a campaign to track exactly how many people your ad is being shown to. I like to see at least 1,000 searches per month... but this number will depend on your niche. Keyword Competition from Other Websites To determine the number of competing websites, many people will simply type in the keyword phrase in Google. For example, let's imagine that you are doing an affiliate marketing campaign for a new Ebook on How to Stop Smoking. So you are researching long-tail keywords, and you find "quit smoking prescription", which has 1,000 searches a month. That makes the number of searches worthwhile. Now let's determine the competition. If you simply type "quit smoking prescription" (without the quotes) into Google, it will show you 2,160,000 competing websites. But I'm not interested in a broad match, I want the numbers for that exact keyword phrase, so I type in "quit smoking prescription" (with the quotes). This narrows it down, and now there are only 30,400 websites being shown. But not all of those sites are really competing for this term - so what I really want to do is see how many websites are optimized for this keyword phrase, by having it as a title in their webpage - so I type (with the quotes): allintitle:"quit smoking prescription" Now I only see 226 competitors... My last check will be to use the SeoQuake plugin for Firefox, which shows me the PR rank of those sites on the first page... and the first ten results look like this: PR 3 PR 0 PR N/A PR 0 PR 2 PR 2 PR N/A PR N/A PR N/A PR N/A Now, I can see that I might have to fight for the number one slot - but when number two and three are taken by sites with little or no PR rank - my goal of placing on the first page for this long-tail keyword is entirely doable. But, Google is lying to me! They say that: Results 1-10 of about 226 for allintitle:"quit smoking prescription". Now I go to the bottom of the page, and click on the last page listed... and those number change... and become more accurate: Results 71-77 of 77 for allintitle:"quit smoking prescription". Hmmm... I just dropped from 226 to just 77 competing websites. Percentagewise, that's quite a plummet! So always check the last page - sometimes what appears to be too huge a hurdle really isn't. If you take Google at it's word, you might skip a good keyword phrase that you could rank on page one for... simply because you thought that there was too much competition. |

"Khadaji" I hope you don't go pointing the bone at the people of Google I once used the Khadaji to clean up my Police district. Worked well for many years, even after I left the force.
An easy way to get to the last page of results is to change the number of results to be listed per page to 100. You can do this by going to the preferences section, top right of your Google screen. It may not always work, but that's Google for you.
I never expect to be "entitled" to anything from Google. I take what comes and am thankful for it. (Especially since most of it is free) All complaining does is get me upset and Google could care less. Cha Ching Cha Ching! I'm over it!
